A rare photo of me with my family. My husband Reinaldo and my two boys, Nilo (aged 8) and Eben (aged 19). This month (January 2011) I will turn 40 years old.
I was born in Somerset, England. I live on the Osa Peninsula, in south west Costa Rica.
I have a mixed professional background. I came to Costa Rica in 1997 as a painter. When I met Reinaldo - a botanist - I got involved in many aspects of his projects, and for a while, I specialized in regional orchid taxonomy.
Currently, I am a full-time landscaping consultant, involved in building a 34 hectare tropical garden. But for the sake of the owner's privacy, that's not something I can say too much about!
My life's passion is design, in a very broad sense.
After nearly dying in 2006 from an unidentified illness, and after having to spend several months each year in the city hospital up until 2009, I decided to devote my time to exploring a postponed dream of working with textiles. Just over a year ago, I started to journal my endeavors under the blogging name EMERGENCE. You can find the original blog here.
As this journey has progressed, I've discovered several things:
I like natural fibers - cotton, linen, and silk in particular. I use scrap cloth most of which comes from recycled clothing.
I like working with natural dyes, either ones that are available on the market, or ones that I'm able to create myself using whatever's around me. You can see more on this subject here.
I am hooked on pattern. Particularly, repeat pattern.
I'm as fond of designing patterns, as I am of making them.
I prefer to work by hand.
I'm captivated by the craft traditions of other world cultures, and often adapt elements into what I create.
Maybe, these points help to explain a little the kinds of things which occur to me, and which then appear on these pages.
I've made alot of wonderful friends on this journey so far (many of which appear as links in the list on the sidebar). I hope you will accompany me on the path ahead.
WELCOME!
